Tranmere story
Jim Cumbes is an English former goalkeeper and cricketer, born in East Didsbury, Manchester. After beginning in non-league football with Runcorn, he joined Tranmere Rovers in 1965 before continuing his Football League career with West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa.
Cumbes was part of Aston Villa’s 1975 League Cup-winning side and later played in the North American Soccer League with Portland Timbers, as well as for Southport and Worcester City. Alongside football, he built a substantial first-class cricket career with Lancashire, Surrey, Worcestershire and Warwickshire, then became chief executive of Lancashire County Cricket Club.
